Martha Faires' artist statement: I have had a love affair with the arts since childhood. I have been influenced by the great masters of the past and the disciplined artists of the present. I believe that beauty is a reflection of the Creator, and the visual arts and language arts bring me to a greater appreciation of the grace of God.
Since moving to Charlotte, NC, in 1994, I have been teaching visual arts to both children and adults. I am also actively involved in Mint Hill Arts and continue to paint with a passion for beauty and a thirst for excellence.

C.J. Fang
C.J. Fang's works are inspired by nature and the ever-changing universe. An ecological view of life and cosmologically attuned living style, deeply rooted in Chinese ancient wisdom (Yi-Jing), has characterized her worldview. Chinese rich tradition has given her a solid foundation, upon which her art world is built and from which her ideas derive. C.J. is not only rich in idea but also in style and expression. Working with various media, she finds ways to express herself through the language of each art medium. Her art language consists of a big variety of art dialects, such as oil painting, printmaking, pastel and watercolor. Topics for life have spoken her mind, as well as the world surround her. Her works reveal her genuine personality and a subtle taste for life.

Carolyn Faseler's Artist Statement: I love the fast gesture mark. I strive to make my paintings look effortless, as if they emerged complete from my head, which they didn't, of course. I spend long hours taking chances and in the process risk disaster. If strokes turn out to be wrong and indecisive, I get out the gesso and sart again. This may take several tries but I keep going until I get the offending section right. Colors and shapes will change many times during a painting session. When everything works well together I know the painting is finished.

Roberta Faulhaber
Roberta Faulhaber Artist Statement: I locate my self in my paintings, exploring, as others have before me, by demanding complete visibility in the painting process, a visibility that emphasizes bodily movement through gesture, using the Van Eyck oil painting technique, which makes possible almost unlimited transparent layering. Conciously, a trace is left of every movement that occurs throughout the painting process.
The gestural layering of my experience to the canvas intensifies my awareness of the physical structure of the paint as it solidifies. In this way I build a bridge between my vision and the actions it engenders as I paint and the viewer. We interact by reading the visual body which is acted out in the painting. Using this ancient technique, the work becomes like a skin. Surface tensions, interfaces, layers, interact purposefully and inadvertently and leave traces of the vast reality that is our body. Paintings become surrogate bodies to be explored, not as a reflection, imitation or photograph, but by virtual movement, color-generated touch, using an inner balance as we use our eyes, learning to walk through the breathing canvas.

Alan Feltus
Alan Feltus paints without models. He draws upon many kinds of sources, but largely those painters, from ancient to modern, whose works have taught him most throughout his career. They tend to be the painters who structure their paintings tightly. They are masters of much more than that but, it seems, always masters of composition. More than not, they also painted from within. Or perhaps they, like Alan, are observering art and nature all the time while not in the studio, and then while painting rely on what has been internalized. Each of us will have a unique compilation of remembered sensations and it is how this material shapes our work that will distinguish his paintings from those of the next painter. We really don't have all that much control over what we produce when we work from within.

Marilyn Fenn
Marilyn Fenn considers herself a modernist formalist, and exploring color, form and space have been enduring issues for her. Marilyn is fascinated by the possibility of discovering a place where realism and abstraction meld, and she's approaching that center from both directions -- representational painting in her landscapes, and abstracted still lifes in the work she calls 'prismism.'

John Fitzsimmons
My painting explores the space experienced as a "witness to a slice of life". I gravitate towards the random, the chaotic and the awkward in my painting and I make use of those unresolved tensions. I look for the drama in the quiet and the quiet in the drama, the layers and the light and the feeling that is "the sublime". I work with drawings, onsite painted studies, photographs and memory to construct my paintings. I take what could be considered a random glance of a tree, stream or a patch of ground, and explore its space and light. The negative space is no less important as an object. I am always aware of perspective, my eye level and the horizon, even though that may not be obvious in the tree paintings. Perspective is an aspect of perception and a formalistic element that can organize or confuse a picture plane and is a tool for defining my relationship to the original subject and the painted image. Giotto is the master of skillful but not slavish use of perspective to exert a subtle structure in a multifaceted painting.

Pam Flanders
Pam Flanders has a passion for painting the landscape en plein air. Growing up in a rural community lead to a love for the outdoors. Her paintings reflect this sensitivity for light and atmosphere as it affects her surroundings. Pam enjoys every opportunity to paint no matter what the weather. It becomes a memorable experience and creates multitudes of studies for further development in the studio. Pam grew up drawing for a pastime and only discovered oils in 1991 which has since become her favorite medium. Studies of the masters especially the Russian and American Impressionists, as well as workshops with today's contemporary masters have influenced her style and helped refine her skills and goals as a painter.
