Pat Kagan
Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Pat Kagan began her adult life in the arts as a classical pianist. Her love for music was one facet of her passion for the arts in general and was matched by a deep interest in mathematics and science.
Pat has explored virtually every medium available to her, including watercolor, pastel, oil and acrylic, stone carving, wire fabrication, printmaking and ceramics. If she sees it, she needs to experience it. Her representational portraits and figures are now evolving into more abstract forms as continued visits to South Africa influence her work. She believes that the strong, vibrant colors and intense light of Africa are a part of her vision, as is her love for the people of South Africa.

The Letter
Sampo Kaikkonen
Sampo Kaikkonen is a Finnish figurative painter from Oulu. His main media is oil painting respecting the technique and style of the old masters. The athmosphere in Kaikkonen's works is timeless, people are without any symbols of specific era and the lanscape is universal. Beside the dominant human figures another strong factor in his works is emotion which mediates through his themes, expression and colours.

Carolyn Kaler artist statement: I have been doing business as The Magical Brush for over 18 years. Born in New Jersey, I was fortunate to have a fantastic high school art teacher, Ludlow Thurston, who taught us to experiment and explore different means of expression. I attended East Carolina University and Pitt Community College in Greenville, NC but most of what I've learned was by doing. The diversity and challenge of creating various forms of art makes working fun and I enjoy working with all the interesting and appreciative clients I meet. The entire process is exciting - from first meetings with the client, understanding what their vision is, the sketches and research, the actual labor involved in the creation, and seeing their faces when they see the finished project. It is wonderful to be able to make a living doing what you love.

Kathleen Karlsen
Kathleen Karlsen Artist Statement: I am inspired to paint images that are just a step beyond the physical. I am seeking to create art that is connected to the world around us and yet transcends our world. I want everything in my art to be vibrantly alive.I believe that the power of art is more than the depiction of objective, physical reality. The impact of art is really the energy or feelings embodied in a particular visual image. Whether I'm painting abstracts or florals or landscapes, my central focus is on conveying a sense of vibrancy and joy through the symbolic language of art. In this way, art can be a source of comfort and healing that enhances the entire process of living.
My work emphasizes texture as well as color. I use a combination of brushes and palette knives with thick, undiluted paint and impasto mediums to build sculptured surfaces and three-dimensional effects in many of my pieces. Florals, landscapes and abstracts lend themselves well to these techniques.
I have always been fascinated with the impact of the arts on human wellness. As a result, I have studied the psychological and emotional aspects of art extensively. I love learning about the symbolic aspects of visual images and I am impressed by research demonstrating that images of nature reduce stress, speed hospital recovery times, and relieve depression. I like the idea that art has practical as well as esthetic value!

Laura Kaufman
The artist at work is engaged in an interplay between mind, heart, hand and material. A master remains his apprentice forever. While craft can be taught, art is not teachable. Art is learnable. Accomplished mastery alone never leads to a great work of art, but a great work of art without mastery is hard to think of. I was once asked which of my works I would regard the best. 'The work which I may start tomorrow,' was my answer. Work processes are more important than products. Processes keep us alive, because we have no time to think of time. The artist as teacher has a responsibility to create an environment that is stimulating, enhances knowledge, and feels safe to the student who is seeking their purpose and vision. It is a dance between the artist-to-be and the artist that is - a dance of joy. The four elements that are the cornerstone of a rich art education include: Art History, Aesthetics, Art Criticism, and Art Making.
Art need not be true in the literal sense. Yet art should be believable. Art makes the world perceptible in new ways, and art itself, in a way offers a new reality. The act of making a work of art can set us into a state without time. To its maker it can give the inner joy of a committed work. An offering to Life.

The sea, the ocean, the waves rising, breaking and crashing on the shore and the movement of the water as it ebbs on the sandy beach: this is what I try to capture in my seascapes. In order to accomplish this I allow the painting to take on a life of its own by turning the color loose to mingle and float freely over the surface of the paper. The results are "landscapes of the sea", the ocean used as a means of artistic expression.

The imagery of Josh Keyes' artwork is a response to the endless storm of information, events, and visual phenomena that we encounter in today's culture. Like an archeologist, Josh isolates narrative scraps from the world and places them in the void of the canvas to see what they might become. The images are meant to feel clinical and detached, with a diagrammatic quality that arises from his desire to see things more clearly. Compartmentalized and remote, they comment on the isolating impact of technology and our culture of consumption.

Mary Kilbreath
Mary Kilbreath works in oils in the manner of the Old Masters, using thin glazes in dozens of layers to achieve a beautiful depth and luminosity. With contempory subjects Mary explores age-old themes and invites the viewer to contemplate issues which affect us daily. Mary works in her studio with real life set ups, in the field, En Plein Air, and from photographs in a style coined by her mentor as 'Photo-Impressionism'. Different from photo realism where the exact outcome is predicted and known, 'photo impressionism' begins with the aid of a camera, but explores the material in a personal way and interpretation. Elements change, are moved and improved as the process develops. The result is a painterly approach imbued with the spirit of the subjects. Mary was the recent winner of The Artists' Magazine 23rd Annual Competition, Still Life/Student, 2006, with her work 'Big Red Shooter.'
