Kevin O' Brien's artist statement: I am a modern, primitive, high-energy expressionist. I like to create my own methods of painting and construction. I like to use materials that I consider to be the building blocks of modern, industrial culture. I disavow the slick, finished idea of what art should be. I believe that my work must embody the concept I intended and also show the movement of my hands.

affects the atmosphere and mood of an image, the unseen rhythms, harmonies
and light and the final relationship between painted scene and the viewer.

Nathan Ohlrich
Reconstructing the past is a difficult process. Visually describing your psychological fragments of memory is a complicated process that can never be complete. In my work I utilize visions, memories, photographs, and dreams to portray what is in the past. The images I create are layered, imperfect, and incomplete representations of my childhood. Some memories seem crystal clear. Others require a glance at a photo or inspiring conversation to reconnect with what happened in ones past, sometimes only recalling cloudy remains. My work attempts to reformulate the vague, shadowy vapors of my memory. Am I living in the past? No, I only wish to revisit simple playground kickball memories or my scraped knee. I am only reconnecting, not forgetting, and remembering who I am and where I've come from.

Artist Statement: I have always enjoyed expressing myself artistically in a 3-D medium. I am currently working on some abstract carvings but I really enjoy detailing a realistic piece. I am experimenting with smoothness, contrast, complexity and simplicity. I am challenged to express my voice simply using often complex impressions and designs in the soapstone. Carving fills me with a sense of expectancy, an enthusiasm to see the finished product. It is my hope that when others view my carvings they too can feel an exhilaration and affection for a sculpture that has moved them.

I paint because I love to see. I love to see colours, shapes, and patterns. Colours that change with the weather and time of day; subtle colours, rich colours. Shapes of land and water; shapes of built things such as houses, boats, wharves, kitchen utensils. Patterns of roofs against each other, wharf pilings, corners and ells of farm buildings, groups of sheds, and herring weirs.
I thrive on the energy of the Bay of Fundy tides which rise and fall 25+ feet twice daily on the other side of North Mountain, a ridge of rock running alongside the Bay of Fundy. I salute the cloudscapes above it, the farms alongside it, and the harbours linking land and sea. I love life and hope to convey my joy of being alive here, now, through my painting.

Since 1973, Joseph Orr has painted the landscape of America where he lives and visits. Working primarily from sketches made on location, he tries to capture the essence of the scene, sparking a mood through use of light and shadow. His studies are centered in scenes of solitude, hopefully, allowing the viewer to escape the pressures of everyday living. As an early champion of the acrylic painting medium, he has contributed to several North Light Books and has been honored with features in several contemporary art magazines. His paintings are represented by American Legacy Gallery, Kansas City, MO; Morris & Whiteside Gallery, Hilton Head, SC; New Masters Gallery, Carmel, CA among others.

Michael Orwick
Native Oregon Painter Michael Orwick, using Strong lights and darks, and a simple color palette, creates unique tales where each viewer infers their distinctive yet universal stories. Every picture stands on its own, while working in conjunction with the others to compel such basics precepts as curiosity, delight, sharing, dancing, and quality napping. This is evident in his illustrative depictions of animals and mythical, often whimsical archetypes. The same narratives are more delicately evoked in his beautifully rendered landscapes.

My fascination with all forms of art started very early... my mom says I created murals on the walls with my crayons when I was about 2 years old. I have always been blessed with amazing 'artsy' teachers through-out my schooling and a family that felt art is an important part of life. I am primarily self-taught. My talents cover many types of media: charcoal, watercolor, one-of-a-kind jewelry, handpainted glass, fused glass. Pretty much anything I can get my hands on. I enjoy creating beautiful things. My surroundings, a mood, colors, children, old people, dreams, nature, all are things that inspire and excite my flow of creativity.
'Artistic creativity is a whirlpool of imagination that swirls in the depths of the mind.' (Robert Toth)

Summer Fern II
Email
Dee Ott
Dorene Ott Artist Statement: like to paint life, because life shouldn't be taken for granted. Too often, I have been guilty of doing just that. Having had friends who have had and conquered debilitating or terminal illnesses makes a wise person start thinking about the shortness of life. I, personally, have been fortunate, and very blessed not to have had any debilitating, nor life threatening diseases. So with my friends in mind, I find that capturing life on canvas is a great way to celebrate or enjoy the beautiful things in life and nature. And when others enjoy my work, so much the better. I like working with a limited palette and 'saying' what I want to say in simple terms. Plants thrive in the light, so in Summer Fern II I tried to express that with the upward movement of the ferns and the bright light behind them. I like working with acrylics, but oils are my favorite.
Having spent 16 years, cumulatively, in Europe while growing up, I was exposed to a great deal of art ranging from very old to very new. Mostly, I have developed my skills on my own with little formal instruction. My dad always said...if you can read well you can learn anything you choose to...and I did just that. The 'art' classes I had in highschool and college did not give me much useful information about painting and color theory, as the schools in question did not have very qualified instructors and I mostly learned to do handcrafted items. Painting is something I had to mostly learn from my own research, practice, and tips from fellow artists who had received good instruction on mixing pigments, color theory, the use of brush strokes and other painting techniques. I'm living proof that if you learn to read and comprehend well, you can learn most anything on your own, if you must.
